Question of the Month: You on the Web

By Posted on 98 1 m read 3.1K views

If my in-laws lived in Kansas, that’s where I would be right now. Alas, they live in Hawaii.

(That’s my mother-in-law’s house and Mr. Henderson’s behind.)

I’m taking this month off from LitPark, but I thought this would be a good time for us to share our various websites. I’ll list mine here:

Twitter
MySpace (me, LitPark)
FaceBook (me, LitPark)

Now, list your websites in the comments section. And please feel free to mention any upcoming books, readings, or other news you’d like to share. I’ll comment when I’m back in town.

*

Next month, I’ll post a new question and interview for you. And now I’ll leave you with a little news from the last few weeks…

harley 1 harley 2

My boys played some songs for the Long Island Music Hall of Fame at Lighthouse Harley Davidson. Hell’s Angels were in the audience, as were members of Twisted Sister. Was pretty funny.

And, if you’d like to see how Purple Day went, Robin Slick has a great re-cap over here, with photos!

Take good care of each other while I’m away.

My debut novel, HOW TO BUY A LOVE OF READING, will be published by Dutton on May 14th. Here’s more contact info than you could shake a stick at (or would want to — though I’m not sure, exactly, why you’d want to shake a stick at anything, even in a cliché that ends with a dangling preposition).

Just back from Hawaii and will take a bit to catch up, but so glad to see all of you here, and I’ll comment individually tomorrow.

  • SusanHenderson
    April 14, 2009

Hey, Terry Bain, I want to respond to the comments here, and there’s no longer a way to comment to each individual post. Also, got lots of notes that people are having trouble using Disqus. Ideas? Can we just do old fashioned comments again with no sign in?

  • terrybain
    April 14, 2009

Wanted to pipe in here and say if you’re having trouble posting to the comments section, you may want to check and see if you have third party cookies enabled.

Within Safari and Chrome you will need to make sure to accept third party cookies.
In Firefox you will find this under the Privacy Section.
In Google Chrome click the wrench (to thetop right), options, and within the tab “under the hood ” you will find it.

If you’re still having trouble, send me an email and we’ll see if we can get it fixed.

  • terrybain
    April 14, 2009

Gurg. How did I break that?

Of course, we could open up comments without sign-in, but that’s kind of like saying “oh, please SPAM me! I love it.” Unfortunately, trolls still exist. But I shall do as you request, of course.

  • terrybain
    April 14, 2009

Apparently my method for turning off the “like” button also turns off the “reply” button. I’ve put them both back, temporarily, since replying seems important, and I’ll work on the like button once I hear back from the disqus folks. In the mean time, fell free to discuss disqus (or something).

    Blessings.

  • terrybain
    April 14, 2009

Okay. I’ve temporarily set it up so that it should be a little easier to comment here. Hopefully some people will be able to leave a comment that weren’t before now. Feel free to let me know if you are still having problems.

    bainbooks@gmail.com

  • terrybain
    April 14, 2009

Also wanted everyone to note, if you’ve had trouble logging in to disqus in the past (or even if you haven’t), you can now log in via “facebook connect.” That is, if you click on the “facebook connect” button above the input box, it will take you to a facebook login page. Enter your facebook login data and it will log you in as a facebook user. Then you can comment here and your comments will appear here and in your facebook pages.

(Note, I had to reload this page after I logged in to facebook to get it to accept me as a facebook user, so there may be a glitch or two in the system… but still… cool!)

As always, if you have problems with it, let me know.

    April 14, 2009

There were only 2-1/2 sunny days. And on one of them, my MIL brought me to an old volcano site, where it was 51 degrees and raining (because of the elevation), and there we looked into binoculars to try to find a bird she liked.

First of all, thanks so much for the Purple Day mention and second of all, welcome back! You poor dear, having to go to Hawaii. (Though I do not envy the long flight but that’s why they’ve invented Valium)

Okey doke, in case you have missed all of the billboards I’ve posted on the internet and in cities and towns near you, I have a new book out, and it kind of makes me nauseous to post an Amazon link given their latest tactics so I’ll also post the Barnes and Noble link as well…and naturally because I’m a total publicity slut I’ll also (yet again) post links to my blog and website:

    The book: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Daddy-Left-Me-Alone-With-God/Robin-Slick/e/9781607670308/?itm=4 and http://www.amazon.com/Daddy-Left-Me-Alone-God/dp/1607670305

Thanks! No, The Pokey Little Puppy was not included. Sad! My son is obsessed with The Little Red Hen. I do see why they fell out of fashion. They are more difficult to read than most young reader books and tend to be slap in the face preachy. But in Kindergarten, the point is he is reading them…right?

That Ben Tanzer interview on your blog killed me. And he likes all the same books as I do, so I’m going to have to read him, too.

  • SusanHenderson
    April 16, 2009

I think Terry’s set the comments up so you can sign in from Facebook now, which would give you a nice little photo there where it’s blank.

And hey, I’ll be curious how the garden project you mention on your blog works out. We made a decision when we moved in not to have grass anywhere (we don’t own a lawn mower) and so have let most of the property go to forest, and outside the fenceline we have plants that more or less maintain themselves. But part of the yard desperately needs something, so we’re going to experiment with clover and vegetables, etc, and if you get better results, I’ll be copying from you.

  • SusanHenderson
    April 16, 2009

I’ll be interested to hear how your conference goes. Who else is on your panel?

Love the poetry prompts on your blog, and then got distracted with the Bar-Kay’s Freak Show on the Dance Floor link. 🙂

  • SusanHenderson
    April 16, 2009

So happy to see you here again, and sorry for all the trouble folks have had leaving comments. Hopefully it’s all getting sorted out. Do you ever show your photography? I always have a real emotional response to it – not just pretty pictures. (Love the story on your Mystic Lit blog about the fog and the wet tree trunks and the open barn doors.)

  • SusanHenderson
    April 16, 2009

I got back on Monday. Tell me, what’s Puka Dog?

Your site is GORGEOUS and simple. Can you say something about the re-launching of books? I think a lot of people here would be interested in that.

  • SusanHenderson
    April 16, 2009

The Book Pirate’s awesome. And even though I kind of like that William Carlos Williams’ poem about the plums, I think it’s really fun to have a poetry you loathe day!

  • SusanHenderson
    April 16, 2009

It’s funny because I think I totally ignored the in your face preacher moment in that book. What I liked best about it was the cadence. It did that Annabelle Lee trick, where the words would kind of build to a roar. (Maybe this is why I struggle so much with plot. My attention is always on the sound of the words.)

  • terrybain
    April 16, 2009

Looks like peeps are back to commenting like crazy. Good on you. Let me know if there are any other problems. I’m still working on the “like” link, but if it has to stay there too keep up all this mad activity, it might be a sacrifice worth making.

    April 17, 2009

Have never shown it, but every now and then have sold one! I went to photography school for a year in the middle of my undergrad English degree debacle, and loved the work but if getting a form rejection from an agent/editor seems bad, imagine having one of your photographs thrown across the room! Or once, ripped in half. :/ I ended up packing my old Nikon away for several years, and now that I take photos again, it’s mostly for fun, and w/o the pressure to make them technically perfect. Though now so much is digital, it’s completely different anyway.

Thanks for asking. I love that you have that kind of response to some of the photos. I definitely go for the emotional shot, not the technically wowing or the dazzling.

  • SusanHenderson
    April 18, 2009

Selling is even better! But what an awful story about someone ripping your photos in half. I’m sorry. Amazing the thick skin artists of all sorts have to develop.

    Welcome back, Mumu Momma!

Just like you, Susan, I am really looking forward to visiting all the sites. I do love to connect with people, so this is just kicking it up a notch with all the folks on Lit Park. Thanks for the opportunity.

I hang out on facebook also, but have only a personal profile at this time. Any Lit Park friends who are on there too are more than welcome to add me. Search for Despina Yeargin…I’m the one with a smoochy profile pic of me and Dewey.

Hey there, Despina. This isn’t a stranger story, but it’s one that was a big wake up for me on how easy kindness can be when you let go of the idea of keeping score: https://www.litpark.com/2007/04/06/weekly-wrap-the-tysha-effect/

And I’m glad you’re looking forward to LitPark next month because everything will be back in full force. And I think I’ll ask a question next time that brings out a little more of the storyteller in you guys. (Always love visiting your Alpha sites!)

I don’t know what brought me by here today, but re-reading your story of generosity was just what I needed. (I do totally understand why you cut back, but, oh, I really miss the days of once-weekly LitPark!)

I have a website, http://www.maria-robinson.com, and I blog there, too (www.maria-robinson.com/blog). I was really into the blogging idea at first but soon enough I was spending too much time on that and not enough on my “real” writing, so I reversed the polarity. I still post here and there, but now I try to save most of my energy for fiction.

Can’t wait to visit all the sites listed here!

Sorry it took so long to circle back! The other panelists are Pamela Skillings (About.com), Rebecca Fox (MediaBistro) and Julie Trelstad (Plain White Press), with Roy Sekoff (Huffington Post) moderating. Should be interesting.

The poetry prompts are courtesy of Robert Brewer via his Poetic Asides blog and the Poem-A-Day Challenge (http://blog.writersdigest.com/poeticasides/). I’m trying to go 30/30 and would never get there without the daily prompt. At the moment, I’m two days behind again!

Looking forward to your return next month. Take care!

My neighbor’s baby died last night, and we’re organizing who’s cooking dinner on which night. 🙁

I’ll catch up here this weekend. I’m glad you’re all here.

I know, isn’t it? I’ll send you the vague details. Apparently, Snyder likes everyone to be flexible – like a 2 hour cushion of flexibility. Maybe you should bring one of your gingerbread kits for the wait?

Maria! Your youtube frightened me. You know which one I mean?

It’s the saddest thing. And no one saw it coming. Everyone was perfectly healthy the day before yesterday.

Oh, my! So sorry to hear this. This is the kind of even that is very difficult to swallow. How will the parents get through this? My thoughts are with you all.

Thank you, Susan. You have a kind and generous heart. That story is pefect. It’s the same idea that my father shared with me when I was in my 20s. His own grandfather had always instructed him to plant a grapevine wherever he lived; even if he didn’t like grapes, the vine would offer food for the birds.

Interestingly enough, while the book is about kind deeds of strangers, my conclusion and deep belief is that there are no strangers. Because we are all connected, there are only people that we have not yet gotten to know. 🙂

I would love to talk to you at some point about including your story in the book.

Yes! Isn’t it bizarre?? I’m kind of addicted to odd bits, but that one is just totally unhinged.

I’m so so sorry to hear about your neighbor. What a tragedy.

Ah, you and I believe the very same thing about strangers.

Thanks so much for this. I’ll send you a note and we can talk more. 🙂

    Thanks, Maria.

And I’m with you about odd and random bits. They can get you thinking and creating in totally new ways.

What a great panel. Let us know how it goes.

I might adapt those poetry prompts to my novel if I hit a wall. Looks like you’ll have to write 3 today, huh?
