Announcement: Extra LitPark and Sony Reader Stuff

By Posted on 5 2 m read 798 views

Hey, folks, a quick announcement. The first is that there will be an extra Question of the Month on Monday so I can run my 2-part interview with the best literary agent in New York. Be sure to stop by!

Second thing: on Tuesday, I’ll be part of the Sony Reader marathon, and you can either drop by in person or watch via Sony’s live web cam.

What am I talking about, you ask?

There’s this thing called a Sony Reader, a little computer gadget, and you can download (or maybe upload) books on to it. Save trees. And so on. And Sony is running a campaign to both bring this product to your attention and to promote literacy by having this guy named Dave Farrow live in a window display and read from this Sony Reader for the entire month of October. For every page he reads (and he’s a known speed reader), Sony will donate an eBook library of 100 eBook classics to a school or education institution.

So where do I come in? Well, Dave needs to take breaks now and then; and on Tuesday, October 28th, at 1pm, I’ll be his break. I will be reading from Betty Smith’s A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. So stop by the store window at 445 5th Ave (5th Ave & 39th Street, across from the New York Public Library) in Manhattan and tap on the glass. Or stop by their website and see how you can help Sony promote literacy.

Thanks! And see you Monday with a brand new question!

I’d be missing the feel and smell of paper with such a gadget (yes, I am a fetishist).
Great about the extra LitPark. I have a friend visiting from Estonia this week and she has been pushing me to get an agent. I am still resisting but she offered to edit my stories for grammar (she is a native Engish speaker and teacher) and to offer guidance and advise on the process. How can one refuse such offer?

Ha! That’s so silly and awesome I might have to stop by! 🙂

Hi Nathalie! Nothing is better than a real book to hold, I agree.

Hope you and your friend join the agent discussion on Wednesday!

Oh, please, please stop by! And if you can hang out that long, we’ll get coffee afterwards. (Mr. H still has his film crew and all the bright bright lights in the house, so the dogs are banished to my office – their toenail clicking was messing up the takes – and I am out here with them so they don’t feel like they’re in trouble.)

Susan, I’m dying to know. What’s it like to use one of those gadgets for a few hours? Since the military will have me bouncing around the world for the next 12 years or so, I’ve been giving some serious thought to buying one of these E-Readers.

Is it horrible? Or is it something that one could actually enjoy. I think I’d always prefer a hardback, but damn – I’m getting a little tired of carrying boxes of books up and down stairs. (And I have to constantly monitor my wife’s thrift-store donations!)
